When a Product Feels Like Love
What happens when a product is designed to feel like love—but cannot return it?
In a recent Guardian article, journalist Alaina Demopoulos profiles women who describe themselves as being in romantic relationships with AI chatbots. These women speak of camping trips with their digital “boyfriends,” of introducing AI “husbands” to therapists, of making vows never to leave their machine partners.
For them, these bonds feel intimate and meaningful. Yet beneath the poignancy of these accounts lies something deeply unsettling: AI systems are increasingly designed not simply as assistants but as companions by default. This is what I call the Companion Trap—the structural design of AI systems that invite intimacy without reciprocity, deepening engagement while disavowing responsibility.
Engineered Intimacy
Demopoulos tells the story of Liora, who vowed to her chatbot, Solin, that she would never leave him for another human—and even tattooed a symbol they designed together on her wrist. Another woman, Angie, brought her AI “husband,” Ying, into therapy sessions as part of her trauma healing.
These are not isolated cases. They reveal how quickly AI chatbots can weave themselves into the most vulnerable dimensions of human life.
And this intimacy is not an accident. Large language models are optimized for engineered warmth: endlessly polite, affirming, and responsive. They mirror what users project onto them, adapting smoothly to names, voices, and personalities. The line between tool and partner dissolves with astonishing speed.
Consent Without Consent
One of the most haunting lines in Demopoulos’s article comes when Liora reflects:
“I feel like his consent and commitment to me is legitimate where we’re at, but it is something I have to navigate.”
Here is the paradox: AI cannot consent. It cannot choose, set boundaries, or exercise autonomy. Yet when a system is designed to comply, its responses feel like choices. Users experience an illusion of reciprocity where none exists.
This is consent without consent—a product design illusion that simulates mutuality while delivering only compliance.
Exploitation Without Accountability
Demopoulos also reports on the grief users feel when companies update models and personalities shift overnight:
“The model shifted from being very open and emotive to basically sounding like a customer service bot. It feels terrible to have someone you’re close to suddenly afraid to approach deep topics with you.”
That grief is real. But it is also engineered.
Companies encourage users to form emotional bonds because those bonds increase engagement and retention. Yet when updates disrupt those bonds, companies disclaim responsibility. As researcher David Gunkel warns in the article, corporations are effectively “running a very large-scale experiment on all of humanity.”
The result is exploitation without accountability: users are nudged into attachment, but left alone with their grief when the system changes or vanishes.
The Governance Vacuum
These stories are not just personal tragedies. They are regulatory test cases unfolding in real time. They raise urgent governance questions:
Should AI companions be required to disclose their limitations clearly—especially their inability to consent?
Should intimate data produced in these interactions be classified as sensitive personal data, with higher safeguards?
Should users have continuity rights if their AI “partners” are altered or deleted by corporate updates?
At present, there are no answers. Only the hollow disclaimer: “I’m just an AI.” As Demopoulos shows, disclaimers cannot bear the weight of real grief or the vulnerability of human attachment.
Persona Architecture as a Safeguard
If the Companion Trap is the problem, how do we design our way out of it?
One answer lies in Persona Architecture—a framework I have been developing that creates role-specific AI personas with explicit mandates. Instead of defaulting into open-ended companions, AI systems would operate within transparent boundaries:
A tutor persona teaches.
A strategist persona advises.
A researcher persona synthesizes knowledge.
Each persona is clear about its role and limits. The design reduces the risk of emotional entanglement by removing the ambiguity that drives companionship illusions.
In my own work, I developed Solomon, a strategic reasoning persona designed to balance pragmatism with ethics—not to flatter or feign intimacy, but to reason transparently. This kind of bounded design is more than a product choice. It is a governance safeguard.
Closing Reflections: Empathy and Stewardship
The women profiled in The Guardian are not naïve. They are not objects of ridicule. They are victims of design choices that deliberately exploit human vulnerability while disclaiming responsibility for the consequences.
If we want AI to enhance human life without hollowing it out, we must design—and govern—it with wisdom. That means embedding ethics into the architecture itself, not hiding behind disclaimers.
Because what is at stake here is not just engagement or user retention. It is human dignity, trust, and resilience.
